Happy Halloween-ers!

It was October 31st, the people we're staying with are half American so it felt only right that we do something to celebrate the day... What better than a shed load of confectionary on strings, fruit in water and some socks and chopsticks...? Very retro. Jordan was a Redneck, Lee a pirate, Jazz a Red Indian, Levi a gentleman Vampire - and me? The only thing left for me happened to be a Santa Suit. Ho ho ho. (Only 7 weeks away people - not so premature afterall!)

Apart from the delicious goodness of the apples, I still feel a bit sick. Here's a flavour of the evening...

Donuts on Strings: (always gotta love a greasy fried ball of dough in your face...)

The ancient and fine game of Bobbing for Apples:

...and the not so ancient bowl of sweets, dice, socks, scarf and chopsticks game... (how did Jordan get to roll so many sixes???)

Piha

Went for a little drive to a beautiful part of the west coast called Piha (Pee-Haah). It's a volcanic area so the sand changes from gold to black as the land meets the sea. And its unbelievably glittery! Maybe when its normal sand colour you just don't see it as much, but it really is like walking on glitter. There wasn't much there other than the sea, sand and rocks but we whiled away the afternoon with walking, talking and ice-cream eating. Perfect! (on that note - we're really into the caramel Magnums at the moment - if you haven't tried them yet, I thoroughly recommend them! Those of you in the northern hemishphere - Whack on your central heating, throw on a bikini, stuff a magnum in your chops - and you're away!)

We are continually amazed at these little places we come across that are pretty much in the middle of nowhere, have loads of houses and a sizeable population and yet manage to exist without a local shop! I found myself wondering if Tesco would deliver this far... Here's some photos.

Ad Campaign

This is Lee helping out with an Ad campaign. Think he missed his calling! But I can't for the life of me work out which note he's playing?! The campaign was for a series of video ads for on the web. Lee and two other guys spent a couple of days creating these stills to be used in the video. The tag line was "improving business through technology" and eventually this picture ended up with Lee stood in front of a very large speaker. Get it? Get it?? A busker improving his business with the use of inordinately large piece of technological equipment??? They were all in this vein. But I just like this photo - Lee in a very un-Lee situation! (I am guessing the street was in a very quiet location so he wasn't too embarrassed!)

England, my England

I am not the sentimental type
but some things I miss.
Boots the chemist.
Salad Cream.
Post that plops through the door,
rather than left at the top of the drive in a box
(You lazy buggers).
England my England -
You're not that good for many things
but for these small things I honour you.

Disclaimer
It goes without saying that the very best of Britain are our family & friends and we thoroughly miss you, much more than any condiment, however delicious and exceptionally versatile it may be.

"Feed de Burds, Tuppence a Baaaag"

Okay, so I am really into Birds right now. Particularly sparrows at the moment. Maybe its their natural happy disposition that is the antithesis to my melancholy streak, their constant playful flitting or their cute fluffy, fat & fullsome bellies, but I'll come clean - they warm my heart. I guess I have to blame my parents in some part for this turn towards 'avia-philia'. 2 Years spent looking out onto their wild collection somehow enmeshed me with their happy, chirping, little souls. And now I have a new garden in another part of the world to look into. And what's caught my eye? Not the showy parakeets, no! - The little gangs of common sparrows (just like the ones back in good old Blighty) in their too-cool-for-school retro "shades of beige". Good for them.

This penchant and admiration for birds and beige furthers my leaning towards "Old lady Chic". Teacups. Lace. Chintz. If I had my way I'd wear a hat and gloves every day. I'd sit in a rocking chair and eat tea at 4. I'm only a blue rinse away from a collection of figurines... For now though, I am honing a gaggle of sparrows on paper and out of clay. Thought I'd let you have a look...

"Action!"

Well it appears that music videos go and music videos come… OK so this wasn’t really “ours” but Lee and I have just spent two days on the set of a Music Video for a NZ Rap group called Smash Proof.

When I say 2 days, I REALLY, REALLY Mean 2 days! Monday was a 5.30am start and we didn’t get back until after 9.30pm, and Tuesday was a little better starting at 6 and ending about 8...! But this is par for the course with shooting days and although I hate to say it – did we even get off a little lightly???

Lee’s designated position was Assistant Director of Photography for the “making-of” video. (I knew there was some good reason to lug his camera here!) So he was in his element, camera in hand, getting in on the action and seeing it all unfold… I had the auspicious title of Assistant to the Assistant Director and Set PA. (Hmm. An assistant’s assistant? – could I get any further down the chain of command?!!) What this actually meant was that I was everybody’s assistant and had to look after everyone and everything with all the practical details from hydrating, sun-blocking, muesli-bar-ing and basically initiating the needs of the crew and band…..PHEW!

I am convinced that I put in the most foot miles of anyone. I ran here, I ran there. I moved stuff to here, I moved stuff to there. I moved people, I stopped cars. I needed 8 arms and cursed my mere two. I lamented my inadequacy of being unable to bi-locate. I was supposed to know everything but knew nothing…But I had a walkie-talkie and a high vis jacket. What more could an ambitious girl ask for?!

Although it was really hard work and we finished knackered and sunburnt, we both had an amazing time. It was fantastic to see the process of filming a project, and to get to work with some great people. I don’t know whether I would want to (or really COULD) do it every day, but despite the lows and the down times – for those two long days, it was FUN!

The basic premise of the vid was to have the three boys in the band floating round in an imaginary car viewing the state of things in South Auckland. (Its apparently the roughest part of town and is experiencing the same sort of problems we see in urban areas everywhere in the developed world – but compared to some places we’ve all seen, it all looks pretty quaint and nice – especially with the sun shining!) This “floating” look, was achieved by strapping the lads onto chairs which were in turn strapped onto the back of a big low trailer. They were then pulled around Otara whilst the camera rolled… We then went to a funeral home where we did some scenes there with 60 extras. On Tuesday we did the POV (point of view) shots as if showing what the boys were looking at from their car windows – all sorts of different scenarios taken from the lyrics of the song – a drug deal, a kid being shouted at, a tagger being chased by someone, a family mourning a death…etc etc.

The song is called “Brother” and the video is due to be out in about 2/3 weeks so when we see it we will try to get it posted here or at least linked to from here. It will be cool to see it all put together and the maybe we’ll see Lee’s efforts in the making of, too!

I wish I'd been able to take some decent photos but I am afraid this was a "too few arms" situation! Maybe next time?

Things come, things go...

Okay, so the Music Video has fallen through... Aaaarrrggh! We had all put so much effort in its pretty frustrating. Apparently they decided that the song we were to to commit to screen doesn't now "go" with their "New Sound"! Pah! Damned Artists! Flighty little buggers! Who'd ever work with one? ... Who ever be one?

So, we're kind of hanging in there, trying to see what else is about to fall... We're off to work on a concept for a pitch for ANOTHER music vid today, but there's no guarantees we'll get it - and even if we do, no guarantees either, that there'll be any money to make it happen.

So I guess we live, and we learn...

Watch this space. For now though...Thumb War anyone?

Storyboarding & Conceptualising...

A little while back I mentioned that we have been doing some concept work and storyboarding for this music vid we're doing with Jordan - SO, I thought I would post some pics of our work as it is now complete...

Lee's work was a time consuming creation of over 50 small pics all beautifully executed in Bic Biro. He had to think about the position of the camera, lighting and characters so that when we come to shoot the Director and everyone else involved will know what to do... Eeek! The responsibility!

One of three large boards containing all the small pictures with Director's notes / camera movements etc:

Closeup of small frame containing Director's notes, followed by some other close-ups:

Whilst Lee was doing that, I had the chance to paint concepts of the environments we will be shooting in. These are completely from my head so have not a lot to do with how things will end up, BUT they do give the Art Director (cool job!) something to work from with regards to props, colouring, mood etc etc etc. Here I have shown - house exterior, Trailer interior, Circus interior & end shot of band walking towards moon...

It's actually quite amazing how involved you get when you've done something like this - I am sure that both lee and I know exactly how we think it all should look! Whether our separate ideas will be actualised in any way remains to be seen...

The Main Characters Part 4 The KIDZ are Alright!

Jazz (Left) - Knitter, crafter, artist extraordinaire, Creature of the night! Loves - fairies & all things fantastical, dressing up, painting, writing, Bruce the Rabbit, Power Animals. Hates - censorship.

Levi - Can usually be found playing Age of Empires, asleep, or trying to get out of performing dog related chores. Loves - Ciabatta, cooking, fashion. Hates - seeing the morning, school work, Dog Chores.

Kim is Jazz'z childhood friend. She's staying with the Dodsons until this weekend. She's been here for 2 months and will be missed. Loves: Drawing, fairies, but mainly Steak, with a side order of ...steak. Hates: Mornings, Maths, the idea of going back to Hawaii...

These are two of the three Astle brothers and cousins of the Dodsons. Kelly (left) Loves boarding of all kinds, Music, hats, being a Mauri. Hates - being cornered, school. Aaron (right) Loves - boarding, writing, Computers. Hates - being short, Fish.

Lastly, but by no means least, this is Rene, (right) with his mum Becky. He is the youngest of the Astle Clan. He's autistic and a real character. Here we see him at his 13th Birthday party. He's dressed in a combo outfit of two of his favourites - The Phantom of the Opera and a clown! He likes - Clowns, Musicals, cold drinks. I don't know of anything he doesn't like yet...

The Main Characters Part 3 - Sir Patrick of Dodson AKA The Guru

Hmm what can be said? This is Patrick. Father, Photographer, Designer, Teacher, Grand Overlord of all Auckland, Guru. He's helping us pin down the core of our Identities so that we can live out of them with confidence, and not faff around trying to look to others to tell us what we should be doing... When he's not doing that, he can usually be found in the kitchen cooking up a storm. On the menu last night - Morrocan layered couscous with roasted vegetables, nuts, dates, feta etc etc etc with flat breads.... Oh My!!!

He reminds me of Lee in that he's a quiet observer and a deep thinker. He can be a bit of an enigma and he's always best whilst walking. In amongst the Freelance work he does, he has spent much of the last ten years homeschooling the four kids, working with each one to create a personalised, project-based, creative curriculum. Josiah, is now a Games Designer working in the States at the age of 22, Jordan at 20, is a Film Director, Jazz (17) is a Artist and Crafter and Levi - well Levi's still in the mix at only 14, but he makes a mean ciabatta and is into fashion! So Patrick still has his hands full with the homeschooling, but always has time to fit in some wise words...

The Main Characters Part 2

This is Heather - the wonderful, beautiful, patient woman that holds life together here in the Dodson household. As a fellow morning person we often have a little time to chat before the night owls arise and I have the privilege of spending every Wednesday morning with her in some cafe or other, talking about life, the universe and everything... When I have it all figured out, I'll let you know...

She's fun, wise and really good company. She reminds me at times of my mum with her ever-positive attitude and her penchant for tidying!

She's a landscape gardener with a passion for making what you already have as beautiful as it can be. If she's not busy trying to keep Jordan in line, you'll find her in the garden. This week's project is the completion of the herb garden. The swing and the tomatoes are next week... Go Heather!

The Main Characters

This is Jordan, the guy we're working with and the second son of the family we're staying with. He's a director but don't let the pipe fool you - he's only 20 years old. Saying that he's had a small head start on us - he knew what he wanted to do from the age of 9 and has had a camera in his hands since then... It could be a bit awkward learning from someone so young, but we think he's pretty great so we don't mind! He's a ball of energy and enthusiasm and has the same passion to see film have a hand in shaping and forming culture.

We have formed a really great relationship with him - its all happened very naturally and accidentally and we are looking forward to what that relationship will bring longer term in our work together. For now though, inbetween the bits of work we're doing for the music video - we're happy hanging out with him, laughing a lot, dreaming a lot and watching a whole heap of films...

Viral attack!

Apologies for the lack of posts for a wee while, but life, work and all things creative have been somewhat stalled by the arrival of a nasty bug that first took me down, then Jordan, and now Lee. We're all recovering now, just about, but our creative plans have had to take a backseat as we nurse our throats, chests, heads and general aches & pains. Its all a bit annoying to fly thousands of miles only to get flu and it has been a little frustrating to feel so unable to get on with what we're here for!

Lee's Birthday Bonanza!

Tuesday 9th was Lee's 32nd Birthday and in honour of the day we ate, drank and were merry. Here's how the Kiwi Birthday day ran...

(This year managed to make a hit with everything - beers, nuts, notebook, t-shirt, iPod Cradle for the car)
11am: Eggs Benedict with all the family (On people's birthdays, here they get to choose the breakfast, dinner [main & dessert] & a cake of their choice!)

15:30: Cake time! (Coffee & Whiskey - Yummy!)

Here's a few pics from the day:

Time for Spring..?

Monday was the first official day of Spring so it seemed only fair that the weather should pay attention and well...erm...stop this darn rain and get hot?

So for a brief reprieve the rain lifted and we had a glorious day, where the only fitting thing seemed to be for a road trip to the coast.

We took off to Orewa - not the most auspicious of seaside spots (it's no Blackpool though!) but it has a beautiful long sandy beach littered with shells and interesting un-english seaside detritis. We had a little wander picking up the odd 10 inch long Mussel shell (a meal in itself?!) then we stopped off for an Ice Cream. No trip to any Kiwi Ice Cream shop, (we were informed) is complete without partaking of 'Hokey Pokey' a kind of mixture of creamy vanilla and crispy caramel(?) pieces. I still don't know what a Hokey Pokey is...but the ice cream wasn't bad.

The final course for the day (wrong order?) was a spot of "Fush & Chups". Bring on more sunshine!

Our new role - "Creative Consultants"!

Jordan (Patrick's son, the director) has "employed" us as his new Creative Consultants and has been keeping us busy preparing things for his next project which is a Music Video for a 7-piece band.

Lee has been story-boarding the shots whilst I have been conceptualising the environments which we will shoot. It's a strange thing to realise that despite both our artistic talents, this is the first time that Lee and I have sat and drawn together. Its been so long since either of us did anything like this and we have felt a little rusty but its been amazing to be involved with the creative process in this way.

It's great timing to get here when we have. It has meant that we can be involved from the beginning and really get to grips with the feel of the video. We now really feel a part of it all.

The video is a kind of fairy tale about 7 brothers who run away to the circus so the whole thing should be visually stunning with lots of colour and atmosphere. Now I have done with the concept designs, I am going to get involved with the producer and help her make the whole thing happen! The next step is to get a whole load of people on-board with the idea (Camera, crew, lighting, designers etc etc etc - a massive list!) and whilst we get that sorted there's a million and one tasks to do and problems to be solved. The circus is in town so we'll use all their stuff - BUT there's locations to find, props to buy, talent to get hold of - the list is endless and it looks kind of impossible to achieve! (A challenge to be relished?!)

I will keep you posted as it all develops...but for a moment at least I am basking in the delight of having just finished the concept work. A well earned (short) break is being had...

We have Wheels! ...oh and a room...

At the end of last week we went on a small road trip to collect our wheels, so we are now officially mobile!

The fact that it is an Automatic will take a little getting used to - that and the fact that the indicator is located on the opposite side of the steering wheel (There have now been several occasions where I have turned a corner with the windscreen wipers going - always helpful! - especially for the other road users who have absolutely no idea what I am doing - oops!)

It is great to have the freedom to get out and about and although we have been too busy to get out much over the last few days (see my other post) it's just nice to know you can if you want!

In the background of this pic you can see our house. Pretty typical Kiwi design, built by Heather's Grandfather so it's full of history for the family. Over the weekend we moved into our own lovely big room so we are sorted for space and have finally unpacked and located all our stuff. It truly is amazing how much you can squeeze into three relatively small suitcases, and even though the room is huge it feels homely.

So after under two weeks we feel truly at home. Our own space, our own car and what feels like a ready made family! I am amazed at how little culture shock we are experiencing coming from living on our own for so long to a house full of noisy and boisterous teenagers with their angst and attitude! They are all great!

Day to day...in our first week

Having been here a week now we haven't settled into a pattern of life as yet. We are currently living in Patrick's daughter's room and have been unable to unpack. This weekend though, we are moving into a more permanent room so my need for order will be restored as I finally locate clean underwear and toothpaste...

One strange and exciting new development created by differing timezones is that Lee's bodyclock now wakes him at about 7.30am (YES - AM!) and makes him sleepy at about 10. This is all well and good but mine has shifted me even further back so that I am now almost comatose by 9pm and perky by 6!

Another task for this week was to organise a car. The amazing and greatly benevolent Andy Kent (my ex-boss at Angel Solutions) has said we can borrow his wheels for our time here. It's a Toyota RAV4 so from today (hopefully) Lee and I will be mobile! We're off on a small road trip today to collect it from further up the north of the island.

Our ministry of "leaving a bed in every country we visit" continues apace as we purchased one for our new room yesterday. It may be shop soiled and cheap but it's ours! We bought it from a place that sold Tempur mattresses so we spent a little time lying on one and thinking of home before settling on our decidedly less luxurious option! My back wept.

We have been spending a bit of time with one of the sons here, Jordan who is a film director. He's been giving us his wisdom on the industry and hopefully will help us get some work experience. With this passion for media in the family its not surprising that the family watch a lot of films here. A LOT. They also pretty much have a Mac per person. Lee is in Mac/media heaven! He is also desperate for an iPhone - and NZ is one of the only places in the world you can buy them unlocked to use on any network. Temptation is near...too near...

So generally this last week has been a mix of family life (cooking, eating, chatting, film-watching) and practical tasks as we try to settle in and find our place.

The City from Mount Albert

We are living in a place called Mount Albert about 10 minutes drive from Auckland City centre. The "Mountain" of Mount Albert is actually a small inactive volcano. We had a little wander the other day up to the "summit" (not a hard climb it has to be said!) to see the views over Auckland.

Auckland is not a large city by any means (about 400k population in the city and 1.5 Million in the greater Auckland region) but from here you can see the setting for the urban areas - volcanic cones erupt from the huddled settlements and the sea surrounds it all. And in amongst all this sprawl there are farmlands and parks so the grey of the city is intermittently punctuated by vivid greens.

The tallest structure you can see is the Sky Tower - Auckland's equivalent to Liverpool's Radio City Tower. Like that structure, it appears to be loved and hated in equal measure. And I guess whether you like them or not - you can't deny the impact of their presence on the skyline of the two cities. Concrete monstrosity or pinnacle of modernity? You decide...

A Very "British" conversation...

I know you're dying to know.

What's the weather like?

Its the middle of winter here and living on a narrow strip of land between water and water the weather blows in and out quickly here. (A little like England eh?) ...But England in the midst of April showers - there'll be a downpour followed by bright sunshine. AND when the sun's out it's not that bitter winter sun where the air's thin and takes your breath away - it's...actually...warm! (I often have that feeling like when you go out shopping in winter in the UK, where you feel slightly inappropriately dressed and are either too hot or too cold in different settings - I hear layers are the key!)

There's no central heating here though so like in Cape Town inside is often colder than out and can feel a little damp! BUT unlike Cape Town there's not that cold-to-the-bone feeling and a jumper and a small heater soon banishes any chill. (Lee still manages to be in T Shirt most of the time?!)

Today is forecast for sunshine with a high of 18 degrees. Not bad for mid winter!

Our First self-take in Auckland!

Do we look tired?

30-ish hours traveling will do that to you!

We'd just stepped off the plane and thought rather than going to sleep we'd have a wander around and try and stay up all day to fight off the jet lag.

So far we think its working - but we still are a little confused as to where those 11 hours disappeared to...

Welcome to our new Blog. We will try to keep this updated so you can see what we're up to over here in New Zealand. For now the wind is blowing and the rain is pouring so we feel right at home...
